Ape Action Africa’s Mefou Primate Sanctuary
Cameroon
Mefou Primate Sanctuary is set in 2,500 acres of rainforest in Cameroon, and cares for more than 250 primates including endangered chimpanzees and western lowland gorillas.
Born Free began supporting Ape Action Africa in 2024. Ape Action Africa run the well-renowned Mefou Primate Sanctuary. The sanctuary, set in 1,000 hectares (2,500 acres) of rainforest in southern Cameroon, takes in orphan and injured gorillas, chimpanzees and other primates, some only days old and hours from death. Once the orphans are safe with Ape Action Africa, their team works round the clock to give any veterinary treatment needed, as well as nourishing food and expert care.
The sanctuary is one of the largest in Africa, caring for more than 250 primates, including endangered chimpanzees and western lowland gorillas. Working in collaboration with the Cameroon government, Ape Action Africa play a vital role in the law enforcement process, by providing a home to primates confiscated from hunters and traffickers.
Having been in operation for nearly three decades, they have also forged important relationships with the communities neighbouring their sanctuary. Every day, the primates at the sanctuary enjoy a variety of seasonal fruits and vegetables, which are grown on farms by communities close to the sanctuary. This is a wonderful way to involve local people in wild animal care and conservation.
Ape Action Africa is a member of the Pan African Sanctuary Alliance (PASA).
Adopt the Gorilla Family
The Gorilla Family are led by a powerful silverback called Bobo. Bobo was just a baby when he was rescued in 1999, after tragically being orphaned by the bushmeat trade. Today, the adopted family comprises seven individuals, four males – Bobo, Kibu, Nkamum and Eto’o, and three females – Geri, Avishag and Jasmine.
Your adoption will help to fund the lifetime care for Bobo and his family.
