The power of hope on endangered species day

THE POWER OF HOPE

We Celebrate Endangered Species Day With News Of Three Threatened Species On The Up With Born Free. Now YOU Can Help Turn The Tide For The Fourth!

Conservation optimism is what Born Free is all about. With your help, we focus on practical solutions – and what an impact we’ve had! Forget about doom and gloom, here are three success stories to lift your heart, plus news of a new project to save another rare species.

HOPE FOR TIGERS

Your first reason to be cheerful? Tigers are bouncing back. India now has nearly 3,000 tigers, more than double the 1,411 recorded in 2004.

is the year Born Free first began working in Central India with local conservationists and communities to save the tiger. Find about more and support this project by adopting a tiger.

HOPE FOR LIONS

Next up? Kenya’s lions! Here in our charity’s heartland, where our story began and Elsa the lioness was successfully returned to the wild in Meru National Park, the lion population has increased. Official figures from Kenya Wildlife Service report a 25% lion increase in 11 years, from 2,000 in 2010 to at least 2,489 today.

HOPE FOR ELEPHANTS

Reasons to be cheerful part three – more good news from Kenya whose elephant population has shown a jumbo increase.

Elephants have doubled from around 16,000 in 1989 – the year Born Free first began to protect wild elephants and fight bloody ivory – to at least 34,800 today. You can help keep elephants safe by adopting our Kenya Elephant Family.

NEW HOPE FOR GIRAFFES?

Let’s make part four another reason to be cheerful! Born Free has just launched our new giraffe adoption to save rare, reticulated giraffe in Kenya. Fewer than 16,000 remain, a 50% decline in 30 years.

We want to turn the tide for giraffes, just like we have for tigers, lions and elephants. Like to help save the giraffe? Adopt our Kenya Giraffe Family.
