REMEMBERING GEORGE ADAMSON
Virginia McKenna OBE, Born Free’s Co-Founder and Trustee, pays tribute to George Adamson who lost his life on this day in 1989 and played a pivotal role in returning captive lions to the wild
August 20th is a date many people will still remember. It is the day in 1989 that George Adamson, ‘The Father of Lions’, was tragically murdered in Kora, Kenya. He was driving to rescue a friend who had been attacked by bandits.
He had been a close and treasured friend of my husband Bill and myself since 1964, when we worked on the film Born Free. All we ever understood about lions came through his insight and example. A man of few words, he was always true to his beliefs and his friends. He inspired and continues to inspire countless people all over the world – including me.
In these strange and challenging times he shines a light into the darkest corner and restores our faith in mankind.
Adopt a lion today and support George’s legacy!
