MONKEYS ESCAPE ENCLOSURE AT MARWELL ZOO
12th June 2017
It has been reported that two Sulawesi black macaques escaped from their enclosure on Saturday afternoon at Marwell Zoo.
Zoo guests and staff were asked to remain indoors whilst keepers dealt with the incident; with the macaques reportedly being returned 30 minutes later.
It is unclear how the macaques escaped, but the zoo has released a statement confirming that the macaques will remain indoors while a full investigation is underway.
Whilst we are relieved that both the macaques and visitors are safe, the Born Free Foundation is concerned to hear of yet another escape from a UK zoo. This incident once again highlights how zoos are fundamentally unable to guarantee a safe environment for both animals and people.
