His new qualification will make a world of difference, as he works closely with our Centre Veterinarian Dr Sisay, the Animal Care Team Leaders, and Head of Centre Bereket Girma, to ensure the health and wellbeing of our rescued animals.

He diligently keeps records, including any welfare or behavioural concerns, as well as providing any special treatment needed. Hailu also scrupulously maintains Ensessa Kotteh’s veterinary clinic and equipment, orders in necessary medicines and ensures any nursing of sick animals follows protocols.

As you can tell, Hailu plays a vital role in the care of all the animals at Ensessa Kotteh and has worked for Born Free for six invaluable years. Now, after five years hard work, Hailu has been awarded a Bachelor’s degree in Veterinary Science and we are so proud! This is a momentous achievement, not least because Hailu was also working full-time during this time and has a young family.

“I love my job! I aspired to be a veterinarian from an early age,” explains Hailu. “I want to help animals because, when they feel pain or suffering, they can’t say ‘I am sick’. So, I enjoy helping them so much. I am so happy to have received this qualification and look forward to greater responsibility and doing more to help. Working at Born Free is so important to me because it has taught me so much about wildlife and animal welfare.”

Born Free’s Head of Rescue and Care, Maggie Balaskas, is overjoyed by the news. “Congratulations Hailu! I am so delighted for you – what a fantastic achievement and a testament to your hard work and dedication. We are incredibly lucky to have you as part of the wonderful Ensessa Kotteh team. Thank you for all you do for animals.”
