BEAR MAULS ZOOKEEPER TO DEATH AT ORSA ROVDJURSPARK IN SWEDEN

8th August 2017

It has been reported that a zookeeper was killed on Friday 4th August after a bear dug its way under a fence at Orsa Rovdjurspark in northern Sweden.

The 19-year-old man is believed to have been hosting an ‘animal keeper experience’ with four visitors when the bear dug its way under an enclosure fence and attacked him. The visitors were apparently able to escape. The incident is currently being investigated as a workplace accident.

It also has been reported that the two year-old bear was killed following the attack.

Born Free is appalled to hear of yet another incident where a zoo keeper has lost his life and an animal has been killed as a result of deficiencies in safety and infrastructure at a zoo. Zoos should – at the very least – be able to provide safety for both humans and animals. We extend our sympathies to the family and friends of the keeper, and call upon the Government of Sweden to take action to ensure that such a tragedy can never occur again.
