Born Free is delighted by today’s news that the UK government looks set to ban the use of wild animals in travelling circuses in England, and has introduced a Bill that should make this a reality by January 2020.

We do not know where our four Lions of Lyon originally came from, but it is thought they could have been traded as surplus from the circus industry.

Born Free is delighted to announce that lions have been discovered for the first time at Mpem and Djim National Park in southern Cameroon.

Also known as an ankus or goad, a bullhook it is a stout pole with a metal hook and a metal tip on the end. It is used in training and controlling elephants by a handler applying pressure to sensitive points on an elephant’s body.

The Lions of Lyon were all found in captive conditions no wild animal should ever be subjected to – an apartment in Paris, a garage in Marseille, even a Lamborghini on Paris’ world-famous Champs-Elysées – and destined for lives as pets.

This is ‘Girl’. We’ve temporarily called her ‘Girl’ because she is yet to be officially named.
