Brown bears have suffered at the hands of humans over the years in the name of entertainment, being kept in captivity in zoos and used as performing circus attractions and ‘dancing bears’.

Whilst wild population numbers aren’t of immediate concern overall, some sub-populations of brown bear are critically endangered from threats such as habitat loss and hunting according to the IUCN’s Red List.

WHY ADOPT A BROWN BEAR?

Adopting a brown bear helps Born Free to support Arcturos in providing the lifetime care for Kyriakos, in spacious sanctuary surroundings. Kyriakos is one of many bears at the Born Free-supported Arcturos, along with other rescued orphaned bears, injured bears and those saved from the dancing bear trade. These beautiful bears are provided large, natural forest enclosures where they can live peacefully for the rest of their lives, if there is no possibility of rehabilitation and release to the wild.

Born Free also works to protect brown bears in the wild through habitat conservation, and campaigns against the cruel entertainment and captivity industries, and the keeping of brown bears as exotic pets.
