Rare marine species such as pinniped seals and loggerhead sea turtles live in the seas surrounding mainland Greece, while its dense inland forests are home to the endangered brown bear, Eurasian lynx, roe deer and wild goats.
Main Conservation Challenges
Air pollution; air emissions from transport and electricity power stations; water pollution; degradation of coastal zones; loss of biodiversity in terrestrial and marine ecosystems; increasing municipal and industrial waste.
Our work in Greece
ARCTUROS ENVIRONMENTAL CENTRE & BEAR SANCTUARY
Animals: brown bears
Supported since: 2016
Work: rescue & care
Arcturos actively works for the conservation of the brown bear and its habitat in Greece and the Balkans. It played a crucial role in ending the dancing bear trade in Greece and continues to work towards the end of illegal captivity in the wider regions of the Balkans.
